Deferment Form Description

In-School Deferment Request (SCH)

This deferment is available to borrowers attending an eligible institution and meeting enrollment requirements.

Internship/Residency Deferment Request (EDU)

This deferment is intended to cover:

  • Service in an internship program that is required of the borrower to receive professional recognition in order to begin professional practice or service
  • Service in a medical internship or residency training program that leads to a degree or certificate awarded by an institution of higher education, hospital, or a health care facility that offers postgraduate training.
Graduate Fellowship Deferment Request (EDU) This deferment is available to borrowers enrolled in an eligible program graduate fellowship.
Rehabilitation Training Program Deferment Request (EDU) This deferment is available to borrowers participating in an eligible rehabilitation training program.
Teacher Shortage Area or Targeted Teacher Deferment Request (EDU) This deferment is intended to cover full-time teaching in a public or nonprofit private elementary or secondary school in a teacher shortage area defined by the Department, as recommended by the chief state school officer of the state.
Unemployment Deferment Request (UNEM) This deferment is available to borrowers who are conscientiously seeking, but unable to find full-time employment in the United States.
Temporary Total Disability Deferment Request (TDIS) This deferment is available to borrowers who are temporarily totally disabled, as certified by a physican.
Economic Hardship Deferment Request (HRD) This deferment is intended to cover a borrower who earns less than minimum wage or exceeds a federally defined debt-to-income ratio.
Parental Leave Deferment Request (PLWM) This deferment is intended to cover a borrower who is pregnant or caring for a newborn or newly adopted child.
Working Mother Deferment Request (PLWM) This deferment is intended to cover mothers of preschool-age children when mothers are entering or reentering the work force.
Armed Forces or Public Health Service Deferment Request (PUB) This deferment generally applies to active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces and others providing service as a full-time officer in the Commissioned Corps of Public Health Service (USPHS).
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps Deferment Request (PUB) This deferment is intended to cover active duty service in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps (NOAA).

Peace Corps Deferment Request
ACTION Program and Tax-Exempt Organization Volunteer Deferment Request (PUB)

This deferment is intended to cover volunteer service under the Peace Corps Act and full-time paid volunteer service with an organization participating in a program authorized under Title I of the Domestic Volunteer Act of 1973 (ACTION programs) and full-time paid volunteer service with a tax-exempt organization that the U.S. Department of Education has determined to be comparable to service as a Peace Corps or ACTION volunteer.
PLUS Borrower with Dependent Student Deferment Request (PLUS) This deferment is available to PLUS loan borrowers if the dependent student for whom a PLUS loan was obtained meets the conditions required for an in-school or rehabilitation training deferment.
